Obituary for Horst Steigerwald

Horst Steigerwald passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on May 26, 2022 from heart disease.
He was born in Germany on August 20, 1941 during World War 2. He was raised by his grandparents Gregor and Mathilde Steigerwald. His childhood was spent in war-torn Pforzheim, Germany amid war ruins and scarcity. Nonetheless, he described his childhood as magical.
Horst studied mechanical engineering, first at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany, then later at University of Oxford, Oxford, England. A co-op position led him to Lima, Peru at age 19. On June 10, 1962, he immigrated to the US to find that the Florida company at which he had accepted a position was bankrupt. He made his way by working as many jobs as he could find, and very shortly was drafted into the military (US Air Force) after being quickly sworn in as a citizen. Two tours of duty in Vietnam followed. He accepted a position with an engineering firm in the Washington DC area and continued serving the US government in various capacities. This led him to Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati where he eventually founded his engineering firm, Technical Consultants International, LLC. TCI served paper mills and other clients across the US and overseas. During this time, he completed his doctorate in Nuclear Physics at Oxford.
Horst deeply loved his adopted country and was forever grateful for the opportunities it afforded him while being very proud of his German heritage. He made many lifelong friends. He was a true Renaissance man with varied interests. He loved to entertain – he was an excellent cook with an affinity for Peruvian and Italian foods, a baker and mixologist. An automobile aficionado, he favored German makes, especially Porsches and BMWs. He practiced his language skills (Spanish, Italian, French and more) whenever possible with any likely participant and consciously did not lose his German accent. He loved both deep conversations and nature, especially the view from his kitchen window on Foley – the ponds, waterfalls, frogs, fish, birds and water lilies. He was devoted to family, generous, kind, loving, strong and determined.
Horst leaves behind his three siblings, Michael (Diana) Leuze, Wolfgang Leuze and Marion (Rudy) Pehnelt as well as cousins (all in Germany) and friends in the US. He also leaves behind his Life Partner Jacqueline C Neumann, her extended family and his pet dog Heidi.
Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Cincinnati on June 8, 2022. Visitation in the church Gathering Space begins at 9:30am Eastern followed by the celebration of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. The Mass will be live streamed at the following link:
