Terms and Conditions

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THIS WEBSITE (AS DEFINED HEREIN). By using this Website, you signify your acknowledgment and agreement to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree with these Terms and Conditions, DO NOT use this Website (as defined herein).

These Terms and Conditions govern the use of the Book Of Memories websites (the "Website") and other services (collectively the "Services"). FrontRunner Professional ("Company," "we," "us," "our") reserves the right in our sole discretion to change, amend or modify (the "changes") all or part of these Terms and Conditions at any time and from time to time for any reason. Any changes to these Terms and Conditions will be noted by indicating the date these Terms and Conditions were last made. Any changes will become effective no earlier than fourteen (14) days after they are posted; provided, however, that changes addressing new functions of the Services or changes made for legal reasons will be effective immediately. Your use or continued use of the Services after the date any such changes become effective shall constitute your express acceptance of the Terms and Conditions as changed, amended or modified.

Eligibility: Users under 18 years of age are not eligible to use the Services without consent. Users between the ages of 13 and 17, can use the Services with the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian who is at least 18 years of age; provided, however, that such parent or legal guardian agrees to be bound by these Terms and Conditions, and agrees to be responsible for such use of the Services. Company reserves the right to refuse use of the Services to anyone and to reject, cancel, interrupt, remove or suspend any Campaign, Donation, or the Services at any time for any reason without liability.

Definitions: In these Terms and Conditions "Campaign Organizers" means those raising funds, and "Campaigns" as their fundraising campaigns. Additionally, "Donors" means those contributing funds, and "Donations" as the funds they contribute. Campaign Organizers, Donors and other visitors to the Services are referred to collectively as "Users". The term "Campaign Organizers" shall also be deemed to include any individual(s) designated as a beneficiary of Campaigns.

Services: The Services are offered as a platform (the "Platform") to Users of the Services. Among other features, the Services are designed to allow Campaign Organizers to post Campaigns to the Platform to accept Donations from Donors. Although there are no fees to set up Campaigns, a portion of each Donation will be charged as fees for our Services and those of our third party payment processors. Company reserves the right to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Services with or without notice. You agree that Company will not be liable to you or to any third party for any modification, suspension or discontinuance thereof. The Company has no responsibility or liability for the deletion or failure to store any data or other content maintained or uploaded by the Services. To the extent you access the Services through a mobile device, your wireless service carrier's standard charges, data rates and other fees may apply. In addition, downloading, installing, or using certain Services may be prohibited or restricted by your carrier, and not all Services may work with all carriers or devices. By using the Services, you agree that we may communicate with you regarding Company and other entities by SMS, MMS, text message or other electronic means to your mobile device and that certain information about use of the Services may be communicated to us.

Charitable Giving: Campaigns are not charities to which you can make tax-deductible charitable contributions. Any Donation you make through the Platform may be processed by an unaffiliated business partner for which a processing fee (in addition to our FrontRunner Professional Fee) is deducted. You understand, acknowledge and agree that Company is not a charity, and Company does not solicit charitable donations for itself or for any third-party charitable institution. Company is merely acting as a payment facilitator for any Donations.

Administrative Platform Only: The Services are an administrative platform only. The Company is merely acting as a payment facilitator for any Donations between Campaign Organizers and Donors, and is not a party to any agreement between Campaign Organizers and Donors. Company is not a broker, agent, financial institution, creditor or insurer for any user. Company has no control over the conduct of, or any information provided by Campaign Organizers, and Company hereby disclaims all liability in this regard. We expressly disclaim any liability or responsibility for the success or outcome of any Campaign. Donors must in their sole discretion make the final determination of making Donations to any Campaigns. Donors are solely responsible for asking questions and investigating Campaign Organizers and Campaigns to the extent they feel is necessary before making a Contribution. All Donations are made voluntarily and at the sole discretion and risk of Donors. Company does not guarantee that Donations will be used as promised. Company does not endorse, guarantee, make representations, or provide warranties for or about the quality, safety, or legality of any Campaign. Donors are solely responsible for determining how to treat their Donations for tax purposes.

No Verification of Campaign Information: We do not verify the information that Campaign Organizers supply, and do not guarantee that the Donations will be used in accordance with any fundraising purpose prescribed by Campaign Organizers. We disclaim and assume no responsibility to verify whether the Donations are used in accordance with any applicable laws.

Your Registration Obligations: You may be required to register with Company in order to access and use certain features of the Services. If you choose to register for the Services, you agree to provide and maintain true, accurate, current and complete information about yourself as prompted by the Services' registration form. Campaign Organizers must register using their true identities, including their name and any image purporting to depict the Campaign Organizer. Registration data and certain other information about you are governed by our Privacy Policy. If you are under 13 years of age, you are not authorized to use the Services, with or without registering. In addition, if you are under 18 years old, you may use the Services, with or without registering, only with the approval of your parent or guardian. Certain aspects of our Services may also require you to register with (and agree to the terms of) third party service providers (e.g., payment processors or charitable donation processors) in order to utilize such Services. While we may help facilitate such registration in some cases, we are not a party to any such relationships and disclaim any responsibility or liability for the performance by such third parties. We may exchange information with such third party services in order to facilitate the provision of Services (and related third party services).

Public Display of Donations: Donors have the option to publicly display their Donations for public viewing or allow their information to be provided to the Campaign beneficiary(ies). To keep the details of your Donation private, simply click the appropriate checkbox during the Donation process. Please see our Privacy Policy for more information on the ways that we may collect, use, and store certain information about you and your use of the Services.

Payment of Donations: In order to contribute to a Campaign, Donors will be required to provide Company information regarding its credit card (i.e., VISA, MasterCard, Discover or American Express) or other payment method. Donors represent and warrant to Company that such information is true and that Donors are authorized to use the credit card or payment method. Donors agree that a certain minimum Donation amount may apply, and that all Donation payments are final and cannot be refunded. Donors agree to promptly update account information with any changes that may occur and to pay the Donation amount that you specify. Donors hereby authorize Company to bill Donors' credit cards and payment methods in advance on a periodic basis until Donors terminate periodic payments through the Platform.

Fees: Company does not charge Campaign Organizers any upfront fees for Campaigns. Company retains a portion of each Donation contributed to Campaigns in the amount of four percent (4%) ("FrontRunner Professional Fee"). A portion of the Donation is payable to our third party payment processors ("Processing Fee"). Donors acknowledge that by contributing Donations to Campaigns, Donors are agreeing to any and all applicable terms and conditions set forth by a third party payment processor, in addition to these Terms and Conditions. The portion of each Donation payable to and retained by our third party payment processors are:

        • US Users ONLY: Third party payment processor charges a fee of 2.9% AND $0.30 per donation for VISA, MasterCard or Discover cards or 3.4% AND $0.30 per donation for American Express cards.

        • CA Users ONLY: Third party payment processor charges a fee of 2.9% AND $0.30 per donation for VISA, MasterCard or Discover cards or 3.4% AND $0.30 per donation for American Express cards.

All Tribute Pay Fees and Processing Fees ("Fees") are deducted directly from each Donation and are not reflected in the amount which Campaign Organizers can withdraw from the Campaign. We reserve the right to change any of the Fees from time to time. If we change any of the Fees, we will provide notice of the change on the Website or otherwise, at our option, at least fourteen (14) days before the change is to take effect. Your continued use of the Services after the change in any of the Fees becomes effective constitutes your acceptance of the new Fees.

Indemnification: You agree to release, indemnify and hold Company and its affiliates and their owners, officers, employees, directors and agents harmless from any from any and all losses, damages, expenses, including reasonable attorneys' fees, rights, claims, causes of action, actions of any kind and injury (including death) arising out of or relating to your use of the Services, any Donation or Campaign, your violation of these Terms and Conditions or your violation of any rights of another. If you are a California resident, you waive California Civil Code Section 1542, which says: "A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS WHICH THE CREDITOR DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE, WHICH IF KNOWN BY HIM MUST HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR". To the extent you are a resident of another jurisdiction, you waive any comparable statute or doctrine

YOU AND COMPANY AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN YOUR OR ITS INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. Unless both you and Company agree otherwise in writing, the arbitrator may not consolidate more than one person's claims, and may not otherwise preside over any form of a representative or class proceeding. If this specific provision is found to be unenforceable, then the entirety of this arbitration provision shall be null and void.

2. General Policy Provisions

  1. Definitions

“Personal Information” includes both “Personally Identifiable Information” and “Non-Personally Identifiable Information”.

"Personally Identifiable Information" refers to information that lets us know the specifics of who you are and can be used to identify, contact or locate you. Personally Identifiable Information is requested when you register with us, make a Donation, correspond with us, or otherwise volunteer information, for instance, through the use of "Contact Us". Personally Identifiable Information may include, without limitation, your name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address, credit card number, and other identification and contact information.

"Non-Personally Identifiable Information" refers to information that does not identify a specific individual by itself or in combination with other information. We gather certain information about you based upon what you view on our Site in several ways. This information is compiled and analyzed on both a personal and an aggregated basis. This information may include the Site’s Uniform Resource Locator ("URL") that you just came from, which URL you next go to, what browser you are using, and your Internet Protocol ("IP") address. A URL is the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web (‘Web”). An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol ("TCP/IP") network, such as the World Wide Web. Networks use the TCP/IP protocol to route information based on the IP address of the destination. In other words, an IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your computer whenever you are surfing the Web, allowing Web servers to locate and identify your computer. Computers require IP addresses in order for users to communicate on the Internet, browse and shop

“Sensitive Personal Information” means Personal Information that reveals race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership or that concerns an individual’s health.

  2. Notice

Company shall inform you of the purposes for which it collects and uses Personal Information and the types of non-agent third parties to which Company discloses or may disclose that information. Company shall provide you with the choice and means for limiting the use and disclosure of your Personal Information. Notice will be provided in clear and conspicuous language when you are first asked to provide Personal Information to Company, or as soon as practicable thereafter. In any event, you will receive notice before Company uses or discloses the information for a purpose other than that for which it was originally collected.

  3. Choice

Company will offer you the opportunity to choose (opt-out) whether Personal Information is to be disclosed to a third party or to be used for a purpose other than that for which it was originally collected or has subsequently been authorized. For Sensitive Personal Information (when applicable), Company will give you the opportunity to affirmatively or explicitly consent (opt-in) to the disclosure of the information for a purpose other than that for which it was originally collected or has subsequently been authorized. Company will treat Sensitive Personal Information it receives from anyone the same as it would treat its own Sensitive Personal Information.

  4. Security

Company shall take reasonable steps to protect Personal Information from loss, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. No company is immune from Internet attacks or data breaches. Company cannot guarantee the security of information on or transmitted via the Internet.

  5. Data Integrity

Company shall only process Personal Information in a way that is compatible with and relevant to the purpose for which it was collected or has been authorized. To the extent necessary for those purposes, Company shall take reasonable steps to ensure that Personal Information is accurate, complete, current, and reliable for its intended use.

7. How Company Shares Your Information

Company shares your Personal Information with third parties when it believes you have permitted such sharing, that it is reasonably necessary to offer services, or when legally required to do so. Company will not share your Personally Identifiable Information with third parties in a way that it thinks violates your privacy. The following non-exhaustive list contains examples of how Company shares or could share your information:

  1. If Site allows you to invite a friend to join the Site or become a User, and you choose to do so, the invitation will contain information that will allow your friend to identify you. The invitation may contain information about other Users your friend might know.

  4. There are also times when Company may make certain Personal Information about you available to strategic partners or third parties. These companies may help Company process information, render services to you, manage and enhance customer data, provide customer service, assess your interest in products and services, or conduct research or satisfaction surveys. Without such information being made available, it would be difficult for you to use Company's Site and services.

  5. Company may also share Personal Information when it has a good faith belief it is necessary to prevent fraud or other illegal activity, to prevent imminent bodily harm, or to protect itself and you from people violating the Terms and Conditions of the Site. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, and courts or other government entities.

  6. Company may disclose information pursuant to subpoenas, court orders, or other requests (including criminal and civil matters) if it has a good faith belief that the law requires such a response. This may include requests from jurisdictions outside of the United States if Company has a good faith belief that the response is required by law under the local laws in that jurisdiction, is applicable to users from that jurisdiction, and is consistent with generally accepted international standards.

  7. Company may disclose analyzed data in the form of purchasing trends or statistical data. No Personally Identifiable Information will be attached to this disclosure.

8. Business or Asset Transfer or Sale

Company may be sold, sell or buy businesses or assets of businesses, or merge with another business. In such transactions, Personal Information generally is one of the transferred business assets. Also, in the event that Company, a line of business of Company, or substantially all the assets of Company are transferred, Personal Information may well be one of the transferred assets. Company will make a reasonable effort to provide notice on the Site, and to notify you via e-mail to the most recent e-mail address that you have provided of any such change in ownership or control of your personal information.

To Kim and Patti and all the family, I join you all in celebration of a life well lived. Ellie was a special person and dear to my heart.
She was the glue that held Local 5 together. Hard working, patient, understanding. We shared a lot of laughs. When I was on tour, I loved to regale her with places I’d been , people I dealt with, interesting things I was lucky enough to experience.
On my first tour of Japan, I called her from Tokyo! She was beside herself. She said something about me being crazy and how expensive this call had to be( pre-cell phone era), and why in the world was I calling.
I asked if anyone had called her from Tokyo before. She blurted out an obvious NO. I told her now she had something to talk about in her coffee klatsch the next day.
We laughed about that for years. I still break out into a smile when I think of it.

Let us cherish the time we had with her
Let us live a good life in her memory
☮️💟😇

Eulogy by Donna Lucas

To everyone here, and those attending online, I’d like to welcome you to this celebration of our dear mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, friend, neighbor, co-worker, confidant and Mother figure to many, Ellie Goldschmidt (also known as “Gigi” to the Greats and the Grands).

I am Ellie’s daughter, Donna Goldschmidt Lucas, the 2nd of her 7 children: Judy, Donna, Mike, Patti, Steve, Kim and Barb. Also recently dubbed the “Family Historian.” Mom was the last child born of 7 in the Schlueter family. She was proud to have had the same number of children herself. Some of us – like Barb, who was our # 7 – wanted to follow in her footsteps, but we gave up early!

This past year has been a whirlwind of change, a challenge as well as a blessing for our family. Mom had been living on her own since Dad passed away in 1999, maintaining her independent living in her house on Linneman Road. Last year, after years of spirited independence, Mom suddenly needed to ask for help with everyday living. My sister Patti made up a schedule, and all my brothers and sisters pitched in. Together with the help of some wonderful caregivers and nurses, we were able to help her with her daily activities. It was both a challenge and a blessing – a challenge to her, and a blessing to us because it gave us the opportunity to spend more time with her. When I went over, we would watch the Reds, the Bengals, UC basketball (all while wearing the appropriate ball caps), Game Shows, Home Improvement shows and movies on her beloved Hallmark Channel. In between, we talked about our lives. I asked her about her young life, and began to see some connections to the woman I knew as my mother. I’d like to share these with you today.

Mom was born during the Great Depression, when money was scarce and times were tough. They scrimped and saved everything. Mom never thought they were poor, and never went hungry. The Schlueter family was one of many who had a Victory Garden during the war, where they “sowed the seeds of Victory” and grew fruits and vegetables so there would be more produce available for the troops. I like to think this was how she got her love of gardening and growing her own vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Of course, this leads to cooking the vegetables – and Mom was a fabulous cook! Food is a favorite topic of conversation for the Goldschmidt clan. Barb says that Mom created a love of food in all of us. She taught all of us how to cook, even Mike and Steve who can outcook anybody on the grill. Kim loved to spend time with her in the kitchen. Patti says her love of cooking stems from Mom’s example. Nobody ever left Mom’s hungry. She was always trying to give us food when we left. The Betty Crocker’s Picture Cookbook that she used when we were kids has gotten worn and tattered. One year, she gave us all a newer version of the cookbook for Christmas because she didn’t want any of us to fight over the original one when she was gone. Inside mine she wrote, “Always remember that the main ingredient is Love.”

And about that scrimping and saving during the Depression and War years... Kim says, “She had a use for everything! ‘Don't throw that away!’ she would tell me.” She saved every rubber band and paper clip because they could be “re-used.” She taught us well: I once fixed a fax machine with a paperclip and used a rubber band to erase pencil marks! Who would have thought that a potato peeler is a good substitute for a Phillips screwdriver?

When she was in kindergarten, she met JoAnn, possibly her oldest friend. They went on to attend Bond Hill Elementary and Regina High School together. In later years, Mom would often organize her high school reunions – a skill she apparently passed on to me. To this day, her remaining classmates – June, Kathy, Peggy, Jacqueline, Dottie and JoAnn – get together for lunches whenever they can. Mom was always so pleased that their group was still together.

It was actually because of JoAnn that Mom met Dad. JoAnn’s parents were friends with a couple who had a cabin on the river. One weekend, she invited Mom to go to the cabin with her. She and Mom were about 13 or 14 and they took out a little boat. Also on the river were some other boats, boats with boys wearing Roger Bacon T-shirts… and one of them was Dad. They were attracted to each other, but it wasn’t so easy for Dad. According to JoAnn, Mom had LOTS of young admirers! But Dad turned out to be the big love of her life. They married at age 20 and were together for 45 years.

About Dad... Mom had a spiritual relationship with birds for most of her life. One day during their honeymoon, a bird flew down and perched on Dad’s shoulder for no reason at all. Then, when Dad passed away all those years later, birds would come to her windowsill at home, or at work, and comfort her. It was a sign that Dad was near. They would even stop by the cemetery when she visited Dad. Whenever she saw big birds wheeling in the sky, or found birds’ eggs in her herb garden, she would think of Dad and be comforted. And she kept bird feeders outside her windows to comfort them.

All her life, since she was a little girl, she had bad knees. But did this stop her? NO WAY! When her knees gave out when she was out playing baseball with her brothers, she got them to bring her home in a wagon. Barb recently mentioned to her as she was helping to ice her knees, "Mom, you have been dealing with knee issues for over 60 years!” She looked at her with sort of an impish grin and said, "It was worth it. I had fun."

After graduating from high school, she wanted to become a nurse or an airline stewardess, but neither career was to be. But she knew no shortage of caring for all the others in her life: my brothers and sisters, Dad, her neighbors and friends. She always made a point of visiting friends in nursing care facilities and hospitals. In her 70s and 80s, she joined the Mercy Health Plex as one of the younger members of the aerobic swim class. She spent many happy hours with her Swim friends in the warm water pool, giving life back to her knees with warm water aerobics. At the same time, she helped the older girls with walkers and wheel chairs; she offered rides to the Covedale Theater or group lunches. It was at the pool that she discovered she had a natural leadership ability, leading her group in song as they exercised. “Who would have thought I’d be the SINGER in this family? What would your FATHER think?” I think he would be proud. She loved her friends at the Health Plex and reunited with them just last year for lunch. She was glowing!

She loved to wear funny hats that she created for Swim and other parties and holidays. She had an infectious laugh. She loved funny greeting cards, Vodka Martinis with olives and extra ice, and building big ice cream cake desserts, step by delicious step. She loved Christmas parties, hosting pool parties, playing cards and visiting with the neighbors, like the Brennan’s who lived next door. They had 11 kids and we all had someone to play with! She went out to restaurants often with friends and her sisters-in-law Jackie and Jodi, many times taking half the food back home for another day.

Even in her ‘80s, Mom had a social schedule that we kids would have trouble keeping up with! Swimming, lunches, visiting friends in nursing homes, seeing doctors, going to plays and performances, weddings, funerals, showers, first communions, confirmations, graduations, dinners, ballgames, casinos, backyard celebrations, holiday celebrations like Easter, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Halloween – and church every week in this very church.

She and Dad had great times in the Amish Country with good friends Chuck and Ardith, who remember sharing lots of laughs with them. Ardith admired Mom’s strong faith, her inner strength and the ability she had to deal with any situation. She loved hearing her insights on topics of any kind and it often gave her guidance or confirmation that she shared with others through the years.

Family was deeply important to Mom. Her remaining brother, Ralph, is now left in the Schlueter family. But the Schlueter and the Goldschmidt families gathered regularly at holidays, first communions, weddings... always centered around food, it seemed. Mom got to know everybody. She would always say, “Guess who I saw today?” and you know she was going to tell you about meeting someone who was the son of the boy she went to school with, or the cousin of people who owned the store she used to go to. She was always bumping into someone who, following some labyrinthian path that only she could untangle, was connected to her.

Starting in 1975 and continuing for the next 28 years, Mom worked as the Office Manager for the IATSE Cincinnati Stage Employees, Local #5. This is also known as the Stagehand’s Union, which provides support personnel to local theaters for lights, sound, props, truck loading and the like for shows, concerts and other events in the city. At first, the CSE was just a 2-person office, Dave Eviston and herself. She handled the books and other office duties. Dave’s brother Kevin – the Call Steward at CSE – says that Dave had no better friend than Ellie. She was a friend, Mother figure and confidant to all of them, and was steadfastly devoted to Dave until he passed away in 2005. She was “Good People.”

Their 2-person office grew with the later addition of Melinda Lampe, who Mom hired to help with her duties. Melinda remembers the day Mom hired her: “I answered a vague ad in the newspaper for a part-time job. She and Dave were afraid if it was listed that the job involved entertainment, people would think it was really cool and they would expect free tickets! I had left my job of 15 years at Lee’s Famous Recipe to finish my college degree. I met her on a Saturday morning on the 6th floor (we moved the next week). She told me not to worry about dressing up. We just clicked right away which is so needed in a tiny office! I think she offered me the job that day and now – almost 32 years later – I’m still here. Ellie & I worked together 14 years & I didn’t ever remember her being in a bad mood.”

About 12 years after she started there, CSE needed a computer. I worked as a computer software specialist back in the early days of home computers, so I set them up with their computers, wrote a program for them to do their accounting and payroll in dBase III+, and I am still supporting that to this day. I’ve been their consultant now – a member of that second family – for 34 years.

Given Mom’s position at CSE, she was able to find work for some of us kids, our spouses, and even her grandchildren as stagehands, truck loaders, props, sound... whatever was needed. Not only was she able to find us work (and get us free tickets sometimes), she became something of a matchmaker.

My sister Patti’s daughter Bridget shares this story about the role Mom played in getting her together with her future husband Todd, when they were both working at the union:

“Todd and I might have never been a couple without Gigi working at the Stage Union office. I had called to ask her if she could either give me Todd's number – or put my phone number in Todd's checks – before she mailed them out. She put my number in his check. It was a slower time at work and I knew I wouldn't get to see him for a while and wanted to connect with him since our last work call. So basically, Gigi helped us connect outside of work by ‘passing a note in class’.”

My sister, Kim Campbell, still works for them and says “Mom had two families. Ours (the Goldschmidts) and the Cincinnati Stage Employees. People in the office would always comment on how Ellie would eat the strangest things. She was the best thing that happened to Local 5. Always on top of Everything. Had an answer for Everything even if you didn't want to hear it. Local 5 would have been so lost without her. She was glad to have had the pleasure of meeting so many diverse people in the business.”

So how was Ellie at raising 7 kids? It wasn’t easy for her and Dad, but hey, we all turned out great! She wanted us to be independent and follow our individual paths. She was a rock in all of our lives. Anytime we had a problem or just needed to vent, she was there to listen. And what a good listener! She had encouraging words for any occasion. She was always loving, conscientious, witty, fair and level headed and had a lot of determination. She was the voice of reason, wise in common sense and acceptance of others. She was always looking at the positive side of things, guiding others through tough situations, and supporting others above herself. With a positive attitude, she taught us to be honest, to make our own decisions and stand up for what is right.

And what about Gigi’s grandchildren? My brother Mike’s daughter Lisa spent some time with her grandma when she was little, living with her and Dad for a while. She says:

“When I think about Grandma, she made such an impact on who I am. She was my main example of how to be a mom. One phrase comes to mind right away – "Tirelessly Amazing." I think back on my childhood, watching my grandma raise her 7 children, most of who were born within 1 year of each other, working a full-time job, cleaning, cooking and loving to no end her husband, who was always a little less practical, more of a dreamer than she was. She did all this with grace, love, and a darn good sense of humor. So "tirelessly amazing" seems fitting, in my opinion. Thank you, Grandma, for being you and for loving me so much.”

Mom suffered a series of health problems, but always bounced back. A sudden heart attack at Friday’s a few years ago brought patron Jessica Story and Green Township police to the rescue with CPR. After rushing her to the hospital, Dr. Timothy Brennan was able to put in a stent in time and saved her life. Jessica, Dr. Brennan and Mom were honored in a ceremony by the Green Township Police as an example of how the rescue system should work.

Mom never wanted to lose her brain function. Sometimes Barb did the daily crossword puzzles, cryptoquips and word jumbles with her to keep her sharp. This also increased Barb’s love for the rhythm of language, word games and writing little poems & stories. Later, however, after Mom suffered a stroke and was struggling with her own fogginess, Barb told her, "A wise woman once asked me, ‘Why worry when you have no control over it? Give it to God. He's in charge.’” Mom said “That was me, wasn't it?” and smiled at her.

As Mom’s health declined this past year, she was still able to live in her home with the help of my brothers and sisters, caretakers, visiting nurses and health care professionals, and her wonderful neighbors (Bob and Laurie, Dave and Janet, Tom and Jeannette, Donna, Jeff and Karla, among many others) who would check in on her, bring her paper to the porch, bring her delicious vegetable soup, help her when she fell, shovel her snow, help her to her car or in her house and to just be there for her if she needed anything. They rescued her at least twice, from falling after a stroke, and from a fire. Mom always said she had wonderful neighbors, and Linneman Road was the perfect community for her. Our family wants to thank you all so much for looking after her and helping to make her last years easier.

And I would personally like to thank all my family for easing Mom’s life in so many ways, these past months – especially Patti and Mike, who did all the most important planning and heavy lifting.

I’d like to close with a short poem that Mom inspired me to write when she presented me with an Opal Ring when I finished high school back in March 1974:

The Opal Ring – By Donna Goldschmidt, March 24, 1974

My shirt hung outside my pants
And tangled hair hung in strings
When my mother gave me the opals.

They were Grandma’s she said
Made from a pair of forgotten earrings
And molded into a blue-green ring.

Grandma gave it to her when she was very young
And all these years, memories have clung
To its golden setting and precious stones.

“Just what is an opal?” I asked,
Tossing a strand of tangly hair aside
To inspect it more carefully.

“It’s not a precious stone,” she said,
“like a ruby or a diamond.

“And it’s not a cheaper stone
Like November’s Topaz.

“It’s just a semi-precious stone,” she said,
And then I tried it on.

She told me that at one time she had lost one of the stones
And although it was replaced, she still mourns the loss

But as I looked more closely at the sparkling ring
I saw my grandma sitting with her bible and her cross
In the black speckled chair, dozing.

And in the other opal I saw my mother young,
Teenage dances and short romances
That come with being young.

And in the golden setting, I saw
All the years that Grandma and my mom
Had seen together.

And suddenly I saw
Not a semi-precious stone
But a very precious stone

The day my mother gave the opal ring to me.

I want to thank Mom for sharing her sweet life with us and giving us her courage, good example and memories to last through our lifetimes.

Mom is home now with Dad, the Blessed Mother, and God’s family. Keep your cherished memories of Ellie, Mom, Gigi, Aunt Ellie, Grandma and hold them close to your heart. Pass down some wisdom she imparted to your friends and loved ones and follow her example. Have fun in life. Talk to her often. And remember your favorite things she used to say:

“What? Do you think we live in a barn? Close the door!”
“Oh My God!”
“I hope it all works out for you.”

Dearest Grandma,
I know you know how much I love and cherish you. You have molded me into who I am in too many ways to count. As a young girl I was more like your “shadow” around the house. Watching you cook, but mainly asking for food every 5 mins while you cooked. Watching you organize leftovers into perfect little freezer meals with a masking tape label on top. Or watching you work the adding machine on days you were working extra hard for the stage hands. Or, watching you clean, and learning that it’s a never ending chore that you have to try to make the best of. Or, watching you remain patient and kind even when someone was being difficult. Or, teaching me how to have good manners at the table and be polite. I watched you love your children equally and understand the special things about each of them. I felt how much you loved me. Then as I got older and became a mom myself, you taught me how to stay calm and encouraged me that it’s hard but it’s nothing I couldn’t handle. Most of all you showed me how to have faith and not get bogged down with wondering how you’ll do it. “You just do it and it will all work out.” I miss you dearly and hope that where you are they have good fresh food and martinis straight up chilled with garlic olives. You worked hard in this short life. It’s time to enjoy your everlasting life. And now instead of me watching you, you’ll be watching over me. Be sure to visit here and there…and I know you will, because you “just do, and it always works out.” I love you spring chicken.
Oh, and give grandpa a big hug and kiss for me, and tell him I’ve finally mastered the butterscotch pie
With ❤️ Lisa
