George VonAllmen

To the Menkhaus family:

My name is George VonAllmen, and I had the pleasure of being one of Ed's journalism students in 1971-72
In addition to sharing a wealth of information about the "art of journalism", Ed's teaching style was very unique, and I can honestly see that I somehow filed some of the "strategies" he utilized... to call upon later on in life when the situation dictated.

He was not overly effusive or animated...but his passion for the "process" and ANYTHING Elder" still came through loud and clear. It was the same understated demeanor that kept a bunch of rambunctious (each of us jockeying to be the next Pulitzer Prize winner!) high school hacks in check and displaying...reasonable obedience". And yet he rarely raised his voice and flat out never lost his temper amid the bedlam of "Getting the Purple Quill to Press"!

I think what I was seeing and later emulating...was more of an "expecting trust" rather than "anticipate anarchy" type leadership, And somehow...since it was clearly extended TO you and, thereby expected OF you, it just sort of happened! You can imagine how rare this was back in the day...and why he left such a strong impression of me (and I'm sure many others!)

I still "practice the craft", sometimes professionally, more often avocationally. I'm sure he'll continue to "edit from Heaven" - and I'll be glad to hear from him!

Thanks for sharing all these memories with us. We appreciate seeing the impact he had on students lives over all the years at Elder. Mom remembers typing for the Quill and I remember not being allowed to go in the basement bc the Quill was laid out over several tables. :) Thank you for sharing.
