Obituary for Sue Hurley
Sue Ann (Bogenschutz) Hurley, December 29, 2020, age 88
Beloved wife of the late Robert E. Hurley, loving mother of Jerry (Lisa), Bob (Susan), Larry (Kathy) and proud and cherished grandmother of David (Stephanie), Max, Mia, Kyle (Olivia), Liz, Matthew, Lauren and Danny Hurley. Dear sister-in-law of Jane (Gunn) Bogenschutz and Eileen (Hurley) Barker and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Clara (Naber) Bogenschutz, and treasured siblings Lawrence and Mary Lee Bogenschutz.
Sue was born in 1932 in Covington, KY. Her family later moved to Coral Park Drive in Westwood where she spent the majority of her childhood, graduating from St. Martin of Tours grade school. Her childhood included memorable and happy times with her extended family – time spent at grandma & grandpa’s house on Iliff Ave in Price Hill with her aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. There were family celebrations, weddings, Derby parties and bridge parties. Growing up in the close-knit Westside of Cincinnati, family remained important and throughout the years, the “cousins” were an integral part of her life.
Sue was a proud graduate of Mother of Mercy High School (1950) where she enjoyed all aspects of teenage life, including acting in Drama productions. She continued her education at Our Lady of Cincinnati College, earning her BA in 1954. With her fun-loving, outgoing personality and love of learning and trying new things, college was a whirlwind of learning, activities, friends and adventures. The highpoint of her college years was her trip to Europe. She relished re-telling stories of the 2 week boat trip over the Atlantic, the people she met, the sites she saw all while having only ONE suitcase of clothes. She formed long lasting relationships with classmates along the way. Her “Club” remained a constant source of entertainment, socialization and support throughout her life.
After graduating, “Miss Sue” began teaching junior high at St. Dominic School where she threw her energies into teaching and later formed the first girl’s kickball team. In her first homeroom at St. Dominic, she taught 60 students! She continued her passion, teaching in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for a total of 31 years at St. Jude then at St. Ignatius, retiring in 1997. At St. I’s she had the privilege of working side by side along with her sister (and principal) Mary Lee. Her students fondly remember their well-dressed, caring teacher who made such a difference in their life, pushing them to be their best in Math, Language Arts and Religion. She attended many reunions of her former classes and derived great pleasure running into her former students around town and catching up on the latest and greatest in their lives. Her long teaching career gave her a community with many families on the westside - “I taught him/her or their children or their uncle or their mother...” It never took long to find the connection.
In 1961, she married her husband Bob, and quickly added three boys, Jerry, Bob and Larry to the family. They joined St. Antoninus parish in 1965 and Sue has remained a parishioner ever since. The boys attended school at St. A and the family was involved at the parish in Sports, liturgies, plays and events, turkey shoots at Schott Field, running the Bars and Bells booth at the Festival for many years, and much more. A highlight of the early 70’s was road trips to Boston for two summers where the family got to spend time with Mammy Powers, aunts, uncles and cousins.
While teaching was her passion, Sue’s greatest joy was her grandchildren. From the moment David was born in 1990, she was head over heels in love with being grandma to him, Max, Mia, Kyle, Liz, Matthew, Danny & Lauren. She loved to play card games (and sneak in a math lesson!), attend their sporting events, travel - especially to South Bend, go to Western Bowl for a game of bowling or General Custer’s for a game of putt-putt in the summertime. Oh, and did she love her ice cream! Whether it was her standard order of double chocolate chip at Graeters, a dish at Zip Dip or some Nibs or a drumstick at her condo, she was always up for a sweet treat. Grandma never missed a graduation, school event, sports game or birthday party. She got to know the teammates and families at the grandchildren’s school events. Often seen on the sidelines, in the stands, or in the crowd, she was their number one cheerleader and greatest advocate. She was well known for making her long, heartfelt birthday cards that kept the kids smiling (and reading) through the year. Grandma was THE go-to person when a rosary was needed for an important test or presentation and was always one of the first people to congratulate you after a big educational success!
Cherished most were the Saturday 4:30 p.m. masses at St. Antoninus with the family in the “pie section” followed by dinner at Perkins/Steak ‘n Shake/Trolley Tavern/Habig’s, euchre games, egg sandwiches and labeled snack bags for road trips (Car 1, Car 2), trips to the storage room to update the inventory tally, lottery tickets always accompanied by a paper towel with a coin taped to it for scratching, countless nights of cards and poker on the “game pads”, push-ups during a rowdy game of Heads Up, Flat Stanley, infamous back scratches, delicious Christmas/Easter brunches, fun nights at the St. Ignatius or St. Antoninus festivals, “grandma cookies” and did we mention labels on everything?
Sue never knew a stranger and was incredibly inclusive. She made friends wherever she went. Her golden retirement years were spent living with her sister, Mary Lee. She enjoyed volunteering at St. Francis-St. George Hospital, Saturday hair appointments at Bea’s Hair House, “cousins” brunch, gatherings with her “Club”, and Bayley Village events. Having the time to travel, Sue and Sis had many adventures; St. Louis, Hawaii, California, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Route 66, Chicago, Boston, Louisiana, Disney cruise, Hilton Head, and more.
Sue was a friend to all and will be remembered for her outgoing personality, the genuine care and concern she showed others and, above all, her great love for her family.
Family will receive friends on Friday, January 8th from 9:30 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at St. Antoninus Church, 1500 Linneman Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45238. A live stream of the mass will be available at the following link:
