Obituary for Barbara J. Brinkman (Bishop)

BRINKMAN, Barbara J., 64, passed away May 8th with her husband, Paul, by her side. This ended her six year fight with stage IV ovarian cancer. We will not say she lost the battle, but that she fought hard until the end with strength that amazed us all. Her doctors acknowledged her determination and educated knowledge of her treatment. We will miss her quick wit, snappy one-liners and classic style! She was born Barbara Jean Bishop, December 24, 1952, to William and Elizabeth Bishop in the Firestone Park neighborhood of Akron, Ohio. Barb attended Voris Elementary in Akron then Manchester Local Schools (now New Franklin) in the suburb of Akron graduating in 1971. She then graduated from the University of Akron in 1975 with a degree in elementary education. After student teaching, she had to tell her parents the classroom was not her future and began a career in insurance beginning with John Hancock in Cleveland, then Prudential in Cincinnati after moving to marry Paul. She retired from Benovations as claims manager. Barb and Paul shared a special bond, never having an argument in their 38 year marriage! They have two sons, Greg and Jeff. She was so proud of the bond they have and the men they have turned into. She loved to read, plant her summer flowers, go to the beach at Corolla, NC, attend plays with Linda, and eat her favorite "Akron Foods" of Belgrades Barberton chicken and hot sauce, hot smoked Hungarian sausage and Cher's macaroni salad. She was preceded in death by her parents and several aunts and uncles. She is survived by husband Paul, sons Greg and Jeff, sister and brother-in-law Cheryl and Kevin Shirey, half-sister Karen Edwards, Aunt Anne Graves, brother-in-laws Lloyd, Neil (fiancee Sharon), Mark (Terry), Ralph (Susan), Alan (Maureen), Donald, the late Wayne and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. There are not words to thank her husband Paul for his care and the support of her sons. Thank you also to friends Chris and Bob Casenhiser, Laura Labak, Erv and Linda Martin, Jorene Lyman, and the owners and employees of Benovations. To cousins Betty, Michelle and Beth for their wonderful visit and card campaign these last few months. To Dr. Leuenberger and Brigette of Hospice of Cincinnati for all their care. Also Pastor Greg for his home visits. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cancer Support Community of Greater Cincinnati, ATTN: The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, 4918 Cooper Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Barb and her company-supported team participated in their annual Teal Walk as "Barb's Brigade" to educate woman in this difficult to diagnose disease. Family will receive friends Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. until time of memorial service at 11:00 A.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church, 3628 Boudinot Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45211. neidhardminges.com
